Does Jesus Heal All?

Now that the official Southern Baptist position is that Jesus no longer grants healing and the removal of sickness, perhaps we should ask: Does Jesus heal all? Here is a portion of the SBC’s official position on healing, prosperity, and provision in Christ.

2022 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION DAILY BULLETIN

“The belief that Jesus’ sacrificial and atoning death grants believers health, wealth, and the removal of sickness… be it RESOLVED, that the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention denounce the teaching of the (this) gospel.”

For reference here is how one Southern Baptist pastor framed this new stance.

This type of Gospel asserts that physical health through faith are the automatic divine right of all Bible-believing Christians and may be procreated by faith as part of the package of salvation, since the Atonement of Christ includes not just the removal of sin, but also the removal of sicknessThis false Gospel directly contradicts the teaching and example of Jesus. Our health in this life is not guaranteed. We may be promised healing, but it’s not in there (Scripture). It’s in glory where healing is guaranteed. Let’s not place our hope in the wrong place. We want health. And we’ve heard Jesus does this. So we go to the genie. We are just asking Jesus to give us what we’ve always wanted. That’s not the Christian faith. That’s not Gospel fruit.”

What Jesus Says About Healing

“Tell John what you have seen and heard. The blind see. The lame walk. Those with leprosy are cured. The deaf hear. The dead are raised to life. The Good News is being preached to the poor.”Jesus (Luke 7:22)

“I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.”Jesus (John 10:10)

Jesus went everywhere in the country of Galilee. He taught in the synagogues and told the Good News about God’s kingdom. And he healed all the people’s diseases. (Matthew 4:23) (Matthew 9:35)

Jesus drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases. (Matthew 8:16-17)

If we doubt that Jesus came to heal all, then search the Scriptures for all instances where Jesus ultimately refused to heal someone, anyone. Should you find such a verse, then there might be a kernel of truth to this declaration that “the removal of sickness is a false Gospel.”

What the Gospels Say About Healing and Faith

Except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them, Jesus did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith (Matthew 13:58) (Mark 6:5)

Jesus answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. (Matthew 15:23-25)

In the case of his hometown, Jesus could only heal a few. Not because he lacked power and compassion, but because they lacked faith in him. The SBC’s position of faith and healing states: “(this gospel) solely blames people for their own sickness due to lack of faith.” And yet Jesus himself says:

Your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” (Mark 5:34)

“Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:19)

“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. (Mark 10:52)

Clearly our faith in Jesus, his compassion, his desire to make us whole, plays some part in our healing.

In the case of the Syrophoenician woman who asked Jesus to heal her daughter, his disciples warned Jesus to send her away. In response Jesus said nothing. He simply waited in silence as if watching to see how she would react to their rebuke—to see if she believed that he cared enough to go beyond his mission and heal someone outside of the boundaries of his calling. Her posture (kneeling) and words spoken aloud made clear she believed Jesus could heal her daughter.

What We Believe Matters

Does Jesus Heal All?

Belief in the whole nature of Jesus plus faith leads to our expectations that he will act on our behalf.

Does healing always come? Is it instantaneous? Consider the case of one blind man.

Jesus took a blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. (MARK 8:23-25)

Our Doubts Matter

Will Jesus Heal All?

When we look for evidence of healing and find our situation has not improved or only improved some, we may conclude that Jesus has not healed. Such doubts can undo the work of his healing.

When Peter first sought to walk on water he demonstrated faith and stepped out of the boat. But when he saw the wind (opposition coming against him) he sank.

He was afraid and, beginning to sink. Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:30-31)

Jesus gave Peter the ability to walk on water. Peter’s doubts robbed him of the full expression of this blessing.

Jesus is not a genie. Faith in Jesus is not magic. Disbelief and doubt can rob us of healing, provision, and yes, even prosperity. Jesus can heal all. Jesus wants to heal all. May we simply believe that he desires and will heal us.

I recognize that for some who might read this the enemy will attempt to shame and blame—make those who remain less-than-whole and healthy feel as if their condition is their fault. To you I offer these words from Jesus.

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned (are to blame), but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed.” (John 9:3)

Rather than accept blame (and also embrace a spirit of affliction), imagine Jesus is speaking to you as he spoke to Peter: “Why you you doubt? You have a little faith. Believe.” See Jesus reaching towards you to lift you up.

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter. (Matthew 14:31)

Our Lord is not one to leave us broken and embarrassed by our condition. He wants us to be whole. That is his heart’s desire. And mine for you. Immerse yourself in his word and trust that what he said and did 2000 years ago he still does today.

A good many claim it’s wrong to judge others. Jesus says as much.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” – Jesus (Matthew 7:1-6)

“I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.”– Jesus (John 8:15)

“There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.” – Jesus (John 12:48)

But there is nothing wrong with discerning a matter or testing the fruit of another.  The apostle John says as much. “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1-6)

Many speak the words of Jesus but are not speaking in his Spirit when they preach and teach. We only need to listen to the ways they deny the authority and power of Jesus and the relevance of God’s words in our culture today.

So how do we recognize the Spirit of truth from the spirit of lies? Jesus offers this advice.

“By a person’s fruit you will recognize those who speak lies. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” – Jesus (Matthew 7:16-20)

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart. An evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” – Jesus (Luke 6:45)

“I have given them your word. And because of your word, the world hates them.” – Jesus (John 17:14)

Get the Son’s words in you and it will change both your mind, thinking, heart, and perhaps most of all, your attitude towards others.

A Prayer for Your Church from a Methodist Lubber

A lubber sent this plea ter me in a bottle. If any of it resonates with yer spirit, I invite ya ter pray this prayer with me. When we align our will with His, mountains move. So as well do the hearts of his people.

Only one thing be needed ter fill the pews, bring people to thar knees, cause hands ter be raised, and voices ter sing with praise. Will we choose what be best?

“Few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better [time with me]. This will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:42)

As we consider how ter fight the evil so prevalent in our times, focus less on what we want from worship and more on what the Son wants from us.

O Lord, you said to the church in Ephesus, “You have lost your love for me.”

When we love you, we cannot help but love others, for we are filled with your Spirit and your Spirit is love. When we love our neighbor first and you second we end up loving neither, for our love will always turn inward. That is the nature of sinful man.

O, Lord, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey him, we United Methodists have sinned. We have turned away from your commands and laws. We are covered with shame because we have rebelled against you. We are scattered because of our unfaithfulness to you. All have transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.

All this distancing, our displacement, the masking of our face and lips, has come upon us. And yet we have not sought your favor by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.

You, O Lord, are righteous in everything you do, yet we have not obeyed you. O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath.

Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servants. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor upon your empty sanctuaries. Give ear, O God, and hear. Open your eyes and see the despair and desolation of your people who bear the name of Christ. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.

O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, Lord, do not delay because your people bear your Name.” (Daniel 9:4-19)

Should ya find yerself amongst congregants whar the spirit of idolatry be at work, consider praying this prayer out loud.

(Yes, we are all guilty of allowing heretics and unclean spirits to attack the Body of Christ.)

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. (Jude 24-28)

Our Lord and King, you keep this assembly from falling. Our foundation be built on nothing but the Rock we call Jesus. Though the shifting sands of culture threaten ter bring down other assemblies that follow after idols and false gods, we declare our allegiance ter you.

Sonday after Sonday, week after week, day after day you present us clothed with the breastplate of yer righteousness. When our Father looks upon us, he sees only yer holy purity, not our filthy sins. With great joy we kneel before our God and Savior.

In all ways and at all times may yer glory, majesty, power and authority be proclaimed in our midst. Should any preach or teach a different doctrine other than what comes from yer words and character, we right now, right here declare they will not abide, but be cast out by yer Spirit in order to be corrected, counseled, and—when they ‘ave repented—be welcomed back in love. Amen and amen.

Be Merciful to Those Who Doubt—Jude 22-23

Should ya find yerself amongst congregants determined ter go the way of the world rather than follow the Way, the Truth, and the Light of Life, consider this prayer of repentance fer you and yer crew.

(Yes, we are all guilty of the rampant apostasy that infects the Body of Christ.)

Be merciful to those who doubt.

Lord, you ask us ter “‘ave faith and do not doubt.” (Matthew 21:21) You call us people “of little faith who doubt.” (Matthew 14:31) We believe. Help our unbelief. (Mark 9:24) You promise to strengthen us, to help us—to uphold us with your righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Lord help us ter show mercy when others doubt yer faithfulness, yer holiness, yer words. Once we also did not believe. Once we also doubted. Thar might yet come a day when we doubt and cast about with anxious thoughts. But you show mercy ter us. Help us ter show mercy ter others.

Save others by snatching them from the fire.

Lord, in times past you snatched a good many from the consuming fire. You overthrew some as you overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. Like Lot and his family, in times past  you snatched others like a feller snatches a burning stick from the fire. (Amos 4:11) If our acts be burned up, we ‘ill suffer loss. Yet we ‘ill still be saved as if escaping through the flames. (1 Corinthians 3:15) In yer eyes, ter often, we be but a burning stick snatched from the pit of flames. Fer this reason, let us strive ter make certain our words and work glorify you in all ways. (Zechariah 3:2)

Let us preach, teach, proclaim and praise yer words. Let us encourage and rebuke, council and console others as if snatching ’em from the pit of flames.

To others show mercy, mixed with fear.

Lord, may we be careful, keep calm, and act with courage. May we fear you, but fear no man. Pray that we do not lose heart because of the fierce anger of ’em who oppose us, yer words, yer will, and yer Spirit of holiness. Let us show mercy but remind all that it be a right dreadful thing ter fall inter the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31)

Hate even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Folks like ter scoff at the saying, “Love the sinner, but hate the sin.” And yet you hath said we ought ter do jest that, fer the wicked have so polluted thar garments by thar sinful acts that thar clothes ought ter be burned.

These ungodly people pollute their own bodies. (Jude 1:8)

“You have a few people WHO HAVE NOT soiled their clothes. They will walk with me. They are dressed in white. They are worthy.” – Jesus (Revelation 3:4)

In the same way that the prophets of Jerusalem committing adultery by lying with that harlot, the world, and living a lie, the ungodly recline in the arms of Satan. Therefore, in the mighty name of Jesus we pray against all spirits that pervert yer words. (Jeremiah 23:14)

Both prophet and priest are polluted. (Jeremiah 23:11)

While such preachers and priests, teachers and leaders strengthen the hands of evildoers so none turns from their wickedness, we fall ter our knees and ask that you purify yer house and yer people from all ungodliness. (Jeremiah 23:14)

Lord, grant us mercy as we offer mercy ter others. Fergive us fer perverting yer words and soiling ourselves with unclean acts and affirming sin rather than affirming yer Truth and Love. Save us, Lord. Save yer people fer yer name’s sake.

Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. – Jude 21

Dear mates, build yerself up in yer most holy faith and pray in tha Holy Ghost of Truth at all times. Keep yerself in Skipper’s love. If ya committed a grievous offense, turn towards tha Son, confess what ya done, ask fer his fergivness and wait fer tha mercy of tha Son ter wrap itself around ya like a heavy wool coat.

In tha same way tha Son warms ya with his mercy, warm others with mercy—especially them with doubt. If they doubt tha Son ever was: show mercy. If they doubt Skipper be real: show mercy. If they doubt Skipper’s Code of Conduct be his commands fer how ter carry yerself as one in his crew: show mercy.

By showing mercy towards them who doubt, ya may snatch a feller or two from that eternal fire than never ends. Thank on it this way: mercy be a long, sturdy rope ya kin toss ter a body that be floundering in tha sea. Tha more mercy ropes ya kin toss, tha better odds a feller might have ter grab a holt and be saved.

But when ya tossing them ropes of mercy ter them floundering about, do so with fear so as not ter slip and fall overboard yerself. Many a crew member has jumped in ter tha sea ter save a mate only ter get swept away by currents of sin.

Skipper be able ter keep ya from falling, only it be on ya ter be alert and watch yer stance and steps.

To tha only Skipper thar be and ter tha Son, tha only Savior thar ever ‘ill be, a hearty salute. As crew and mates we give all respect, honor, and praise, ‘cause Skip and his Son be full of all glory majesty, authority, and power.

Should ya find yerself amongst congregants infected with godless folk, consider this prayer of confession fer you and yer crew.

(Yes, we all be guilty of the rampant apostasy that infects the Body of Christ.)

Lord, well we know that scoffers ‘ill follow thar own ungodly desires. Among our own number such fellers distort yer truth in order ter draw away yer disciples (Acts 20:30). Yer Spirit clearly says in later times some ‘ill abandon the faith. We kin spy such fellers by the way they follow thar own natural instincts. These folks blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too ‘ill perish (2 Peter 2:12).

They do not ‘ave yer Spirit. Instead they follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1).

Such reprobates seek ter divide us, but we ‘ill pray on in yer Holy Spirit of Truth in the most holy way. We ‘ill keep ter ourselves in Skipper’s love fer we know that the Son always be interceding fer us (Romans 8:34).

Be we facin’ troubles, hard times, persecution fer the faith, hunger, famine, nakedness, in danger, facing death? No matter. Nothin’ kin take us out of yer lovin’ arms. Past circumstances or future trials? Earthly powers or principalities in the spiritual realm? No, none ‘ill separate us from yer love. The love of Skipper be in the Son and that love lives in us. Amen.
